Johnny's Reviews:

the_Batman
The Batman movie stands up to the expectations. I've been a Batman fan since the days when Adam West first donned the cape and cowl. When I saw Michael Keaton as Bruce Wayne and Batman, I was hooked. Since then, I didn't think anyone could hold a candle to his portrayal of the Dark Night...until Nolan's Dark Night with Christian Bale and Heath Ledger.
When Ben Affleck came onto the scene, he pulled off the duality of being both Bruce Wayne and Batman much like Michael Keaton. Now that Robert Pattinson has arrived, he has showed us the 'vengeful' side of Bruce Wayne that needed to be told.
The Batman doesn't need to tell the story about how Bruce's parents were brutally murdered turning him into a vigilante. We've seen that story a dozen times over...now we're getting to see the story meant for the Big Screen.
Much like The Long Halloween or Batman Year One, but more like Batman: Year Two...I also saw ties to Hush. I know this isn't supposed to fit into the current DCEU, but I look forward to more movies like this one!
Should the next movie feature Mr. Freeze and The Joker?
Let me know your thoughts...No Spoilers!

Starring: Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Colin Farrell, Jeffrey Wright, Paul Dano, John Turturro and Andy Serkis.
Rated PG-13 (for strong violent and disturbing content, drug content, strong language, and some suggestive material).
Running Time: 2 Hr. 56 Min.

Ghostbusters_Afterlife
Funny how we have another sequel almost 40 years in the making much like Halloween!
It's actually been 37 years since the original Ghostbusters first blazed across the big silver screen...this is a more than a reunion...
Ghostbusters: Afterlife is exactly what the name implies, what happened to the original Ghostbusters...are all the ghosts gone? Or are they simply waiting for the right time to come back?
I knew from previews and trailers that there were new characters, but I also knew 3 out of the original 4 Ghostbusters were also in the movie.
And that's where we find the missing 4th ghostbuster (the late Harold Ramis)...
He's left a trail of ectoplasm for his Daughter (Carrie Coon) and Granddaughter Phoebe (Mckenna Grace) to follow before the next apocalypse happens...
Along with Phoebe's brother, her new friend Podcast, and their summer school teacher played by the always funny Paul Rudd, they uncover what Egon was planning to do in the little town of Somerville, Oklahoma.
Will Phoebe be able to figure out her grandfather's secrets in time?
Watch for yourself!

Starring: Carrie Coon, Paul Rudd, Finn Wolfhard, Mckenna Grace, Logan Kim, Celeste O'Connor, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, Annie Potts, Sigourney Weaver, Bob Gunton, and J.K. Simmons.
Rated PG-13 (for supernatural action and some suggestive references).

Halloween_Kills
It's October and Halloween is just around the corner...and so is Michael Meyers!
It's been 40 years since that fateful night that evil was born...and long time survivor Laurie Strode thinks she finally killed him...or has she?
In 2018, that's what they thought, but they were wrong...horribly wrong.
I didn't know what to expect from this movie, but if you're a fan since the first, then this movie is for you.
Jamie Lee Curtis does her best to survive, but her friends not so much. The movie ties in parts we missed the first time around and picks up where the last one left off.
As little Tommy Doyle (Anthony Michael Hall), all grown up now, says, "Evil Dies Tonight!" Or does it?

Starring: Jamie Lee Curtis, Judy Greer, Andi Matichak, James Jude Courtney, Nick Castle, Airon Armstrong, Will Patton, Thomas Mann, Jim Cummings, Dylan Arnold, Robert Longstreet, Anthony Michael Hall, Charles Cyphers, Scott MacArthur, Michael McDonald, Ross Bacon, Kyle Richards, Nancy Stephens, Diva Tyler, Lenny Clarke, Brian Mays,, Michael Smallwood,Carmela McNeal, and Omar J. Dorsey. Rated R (for strong bloody violence throughout, grisly images, language and some drug use).

The_Hunt
The most talked about movie of the year is one that no one has ever seen...
That is until I just watched it!
Now I knew that the story was about a couple of strangers who get kidnapped and are used as wild game for a human hunting spree, but I didn't count on the twists and superb acting from the leading actresses.
The final act is worth watching the rest of the movie to get to the climatic end of the brutality.
Betty Gilpin (most notably from the hit Netflix series G.L.O.W.) does a stupendous job here and seems to be on the rise for more roles to come.
I enjoyed slasher movies like Friday the 13th growing up, and kill or be killed movies like the recent Ready or Not, which The Hunt reminds me a little of both, but it does keep you guessing who are the hunters...and who are the hunted.

Starring: Betty Gilpin, Hilary Swank, Ike Barinholtz, Wayne Duvall, Ethan Suplee, Emma Roberts, Christopher Berry, Sturgill Simpson, Kate Nowlin, Amy Madigan, Reed Birney, Glenn Howerton, Steve Coulter, Dean J. West, Vince Pisani, Teri Wyble, Steve Mokate, Sylvia Grace Crim, Jason Kirkpatrick, Macon Blair, J.C. MacKenzie, Tadasay Young, Hannah Alline. Rated R (for strong bloody violence, and language throughout).

Brightburn
He's not here to save the world.
What if a child from another world crash-landed on Earth, but instead of becoming a hero to mankind, he proved to be something far more sinister?
I have seen Deadpool, Logan, Venom, and the Joker and they were dark, but this movie takes the cake!
I like my superhero movies medium-to-well done like my steak, thank you. Lots of action and special effects...maybe a little romance...but definitely lots of fighting. This is just horrific grindhouse drive-in cinema.
I guess it just answers the question...what if...
But it was good as a horror/thriller movie...if you like zombies and gore...you'll love this one.
Not a Valentine's Day movie... then there's Blumhouse's Fantasy Island? I guess we like to be scared.

Starring: Elizabeth Banks, David Denman, Jackson A. Dunn, Abraham Clinkscales, Christian Finlayson, Jennifer Holland, Emmie Hunter, Matt Jones, Meredith Hagner, Becky Wahlstrom, Terence Rosemore, and Gregory Alan Williams.
Rated R (for horror violence/bloody images, and language).

Shazam!
Just say the word.
Shazam!
And the movie is a hit! To say that this is a supersized, superhero-themed version of the movie...'BIG'...well, in a lot of ways, it is. And there is even a reference to the movie as an Easter egg.
Most superhero movies show origins as a dark, gloomy, and sad story that the hero lost his parents and is all alone now. He, or she, must avenge their loss and be a beacon of light for the forces of good.
Okay, the movie does have that, but it's funny! I remember the first Superman movie...you will believe a man can fly!

But it had humor, too. Now it took countless movies since then...40 years later...to make another superhero movie for ALL ages to enjoy.

So, like in the movie, the question is...if you had a choice of superpowers, flight or invisibility, which one would you choose?
It doesn't matter what your level of interest is, or how old you are, you will like Shazam!
Surprisingly, DC has done it again!
Starring Zachary Levi, Asher Angel, Mark Strong, Simon Hounsou, Grace Fulton, Cooper Andrews, and Marta Milans.
Rated PG-13 (for intense sequences of action, language and suggestive material).

Click Here to watch Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse trailer!
So Marvel fans, have you seen Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse yet?
For a Sony Pictures Animation project, the quality of this film is similar to other animation we've seen on the big screen, but as always, this is for the next generation...for today's kids. It's not a Marvel/Disney adventure, but you can still appreciate the work presented here and enjoy the movie. I liked the references that the original web slinger makes to his many movie appearances, but as Spider-Man, not Peter Parker, so there are no cameos by former webheads (of course all the while it is animation, not a live action movie). I suppose I was looking for something more like the MCEU and the now Tom Holland version of Spider-Man, than the introduction of the Miles Morales character in animated form.
My suggestion, save your opinions until you see the whole movie...then you'll either like it or you won't. I'm a die hard Spidey fan and I liked it. Bottom line, keep 'em swinging!
Spider-Man Into The Spider-Verse is in Theaters Now!
Starring the voices of Shameik Moore, Jake Johnson, Hailee Steinfeld, Lily Tomlin, Liev Schreiber, Zoë Kravitz, Chris Pine and Nicolas Cage. Rated PG for frenetic sequences of animated action violence, thematic elements, and mild language.

Click Here to watch Ant-Man and the Wasp trailer!
So Marvel fans, have you seen the Ant-Man and the Wasp?
***SPOILER ALERT***
I couldn't wait to see this movie and it did not dissapoint... well, that was until the end credits, that is.
We pick up after Captain America: Civil War and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) is on house arrest after taking a deal that keeps him out of prison and near his daughter Cassie. What he doesn't know is Thanos is near and there's more at stake than his own family. But that's exactly what this is...a fun, family, action-adventure film! Forget the rest and enjoy a superhero movie for all ages! I will tell you that however moviegoers view this much anticipated chapter in the MCEU, Ant-Man will save the day (and perhaps the fabric of our reality) when he enters the Quantum Realm to help save the Avengers since Thanos gets a hold of all of the infinity stones and half of our heroes are dust.
Watch the trailer and you will see that Ant-Man does enter the Quantum Realm, and that's where he meets the original Wasp, Janet Van Dyne, so she can escape to help them defeat the Ghost. But what role does Ant-Man play in the larger MCEU? We'll have to wait and see...
Ant-Man and the Wasp is in Theaters Now!
Starring Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Michael Douglas, Michael Pena, Hannah John-Kamen, Laurence Fishburne and Michelle Pfeiffer. Rated PG-13 for some sci-fi action violence.

Click Here to watch The Shape Of Water trailer! I got a chance to watch this movie before the Oscars and I am glad I did.
The Shape Of Water, winner of the Best Picture Academy Award, stars Sally Hawkins as Elisa, a mute, isolated woman who works as a cleaning lady in a hidden, high-security government laboratory in 1962 Baltimore. Her life changes forever when she discovers the lab's classified asset -- a mysterious, scaled creature from South America that survives by living in a water tank. Elisa soon learns that the creatures' fate and very survival lies in the hands of a hostile government agent and a marine biologist.
Most stories about the 'Beauty and the Beast' are regal and do not have the central characters take their relationship to the level that this film does. We usually see a fantasy world brought to life and we get a glimpse of it, much like the upcoming 'A Wrinkle In Time', a Disney film. What sets this love story apart from other similar tales, is that here, we see a creature brought into our world, at a time when man was very hateful and defensive. An alien unlike no other meets what appears to be, one of us...or is she? I was intrigued to watch this movie thinking it would take me beyond the classic, Creature From The Black Lagoon, and it did. Let's just say you'll want to see it till the end and you won't be disappointed.
Parental Guidance is suggested and kids under 13 should stay at home due to some language, graphic violence, brief nudity and sexual content.
The Shape Of Water also stars Michael Shannon, Richard Jenkins, Octavia Spencer, Michael Stuhlbarg, Nick Searcy, and Doug Jones as the Amphibian man. You can watch 'A Shape Of Water' online now.
If I would have seen this movie in the theater, I would have given this movie 4 stars, but it came close.

Click Here to watch the Happy Death Day trailer! When I first saw the trailer last year for this movie, I thought it was gonna be another college slasher movie using Bill Murray's Groundhog Day as a plot line to the story. Then I read some reviews when it came out on DVD and Blu-Ray and I thought it might be fun to watch.
Wow, was I ever surprised. Not only does it succeed in turning a familiar plot into a great horror movie, the acting is rather good. Especially from the lead character, Tree (Jessica Rothe), who has to relive the same day over and over, her birthday. There are other unique aspects to the circumstances that help create the paradox she must face until she can unlock the key to break the cycle. I thought of 'Groundhog Day' meets 'Final Destination' meets 'Mean Girls', 'cause when it starts out, this girl needs a reality check and she gets one the hard way.
One of the things that I liked about this film is it didn't have to get too gratuitous or gory, and used subtle innuendo to keep it fun and suspenseful at the same time. If you have seen Groundhog Day, you know that the main character eventually tries to kill himself to stop the cycle, but that never works. It's only by changing himself that gives him a chance to stop the insanity and see another day...not the same day.
Another movie that came out recently using this same vehicle was 'Before I Fall' with Zoey Deutch, but out of the two, I'd say this one takes the cake, or cupcake in this instance.
Happy Death Day also stars Israel Broussard, Ruby Modine, Lori Spengler, Charles Aitken, Laura Clifton, Jason Bayle, Rob Mello, Rachel Matthews, Ramsey Anderson, Brady Lewis, Phi Vu, Tenea Intriago, Blaine Kern III, Cariella Smith, Jimmy Gonzales, Billy Slaughter, Donna Duplantier, GiGi Erneta, Lindsey G. Smith, Dane Rhodes, Caleb Spillyards, Missy Yager, and Tran Tran. You can rent or buy 'Happy Death Day' or download a digital copy online now.
If I would have seen this movie in the theater, I would have given this movie 3.5 stars, but it came close.

Click Here to watch the Justice League movie trailer! If you had one word to describe this movie, what would it be? Fans of DC comics have been waiting a long time for these characters to come together on the big screen, so I choose...
FINALLY.
What we have been given...that's up for you to decide.
Justice League brings together a band of heroes in the wake of the death of Superman (Henry Cavill) when Batman (Ben Affleck) and Wonder Woman (Gal Gadot) seek out the aid of warriors like Aquaman (Jason Mamoa), the Flash (Ezra Miller), and Cyborg (Ray Fisher) to battle the apocalyptic Steppenwolf.
As I have mentioned before, no hero, or in this case heroes, can stand out in any comic book movie without an equally strong nemesis. Wonder Woman delivered on a grander scale regardless of her opponent. Did this movie deliver with a worthy cinematic villain? Not really.
Let's face it. I want Lex Luthor or Darkseid, not his lackey wannabe conqueror and hoard of parademons. We have not seen the other heroes' archnemesises yet beforehand, so I felt robbed of a good story.
Like Steppenwolf says in one of the trailers...no Kryptonian, no Lanterns, no protectors... Well, don't count your eggs before they're hatched! Our heroes do deliver good performances individually before teaming up, but as a team, it felt rushed. And without revealing any spoilers, is it enough to win the day?
Is Justice League the best DCEU has to offer? Was it as good as Wonder Woman or Batman v Superman, or Suicide Squad?
The movie also stars Amy Adams, Jeremy Irons, Diane Lane, Connie Nielsen, J.K. Simmons, Amber Heard, and Joe Morton. You can see 'Justice League' in Theaters.
If I would have seen this movie in IMAX, I would have given this movie 3.5 stars, but it still was action-packed to watch. If I do get to an IMAX, I may give it a higher rating.

Click Here to watch the Spider-Man Homecoming trailer! So any fan of Spider-Man knows the origin story of how Peter Parker was bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes a web slinging superhero...that's not Homecoming.
Spider-Man: Homecoming takes our beloved Marvel hero to new heights as an intern to mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.). We last saw Peter (Tom Holland) go toe-to-toe with some of the Avengers. To become an Avenger, Peter must find the hero inside as well as understand how to use his new hi-tech suit designed and monitored by Stark. That's no easy task as he faces the Vulture played by Michael Keaton who steals the show in my opinion. He comes full circle in his acting career having played my favorite hero, BATMAN, and now as a villain in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
No hero can stand out in any comic book movie without an equally strong nemesis. Wonder Woman delivered on a grander scale regardless of her opponent. Did this movie deliver? Yeah, but not in that way. Peter Parker is humorous, but always remember, he is still just a kid. Having the tie into Tony Stark and Iron Man just made sense after all the previous movie versions and Peter still has the skills and intelligence to create his web fluid and basic shooters, before Stark gives him the upgrade. I don't think it was as much an impact as the first Spider-Man movie with Tobey Maguire, but it was an entertaining film.
The movie also stars Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Kenneth Choi, Selenis Leyva, Angourie Rice, Martin Starr, and Garcelle Beauvais. You can rent or buy 'Spider-Man: Homecoming' or download a digital copy online now.

Click Here to watch the Kong: Skull Island trailer! If you love monster movies, action, explosions, and excitement... Look no further! Kong: Skull Island definitely delivers the action in this take on a classic telling of King Kong. I wasn't sold on Samuel "Snakes On A Plane" Jackson, but it added an element of man against monster that made the story work. I'm not a war movie fan, but you'll see and hear a lot of ties to Apocalypse Now, even in the movie poster. Tom Hiddleston also shows he can hold his own as an action star away from his Loki fame with Marvel studios. Speaking of Marvel, not only has Tom been in a Marvel movie, but Samuel L. Jackson, John C. Reilly, and Brie Larson (who will be starring as Captain Marvel) are in or have been in Marvel movies as well.
Kong is king here, and even the natives know that...he is their God. I must say I enjoyed this movie and regret not seeing yet another action-packed movie in IMAX. The monsters and carnage that ensues from them is something to be watched on the big screen.
The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, John Goodman, Tom Hiddleston, Brie Larson, and John C. Reilly. You can rent or buy 'Kong: Skull Island' or download a digital copy online now.

Click Here to watch the Rogue One trailer! A Long Time Ago, In A Galaxy Far, Far Away... another great adventure took place. Forty years later and I'm still watching Star Wars! That's not the amazing part. What I found surprising is how much Rogue One: A Star Wars Story seems like New Hope when this all began. The story is similar, yet no Jedi knight, only the one that becomes a master of evil, Darth Vader. No, the central figure in this story does not possess the FORCE, she embraces it, unlike Luke Skywalker, when he lost his aunt and uncle, he begins his quest to become a Jedi master. Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) on the other hand, has another destiny. She too must leave behind her family and go in search of the truth. But all she has is faith and whole lot of guts. Out of any female character in the Star Wars cinematic universe, save Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher), Jyn Erso is my second favorite! I also enjoyed Alan Tudyk as K-2SO. He was sharp, witty, and tough. What also struck me was how they pulled off Governor Tarkin (Guy Henry). He not only looked like Peter Cushing, but also sounded like the original character. There are other subtle 'Easter eggs' I enjoyed, too. Maybe I can come up with a quiz or game to see how many scenes you can find that lead up to the first movie and the beginning of this saga. Young or Old, it's an adventure anyone for any Star Wars fan. Even if you started at Episode One with Anakin Skywalker, you'll enjoy this movie.
Also starring Diego Luna as Cassian Andor, Donnie Yen as Chirrut Imwe, Wen Jiang as Baze Malbus, Ben Mendelsohn as Orson Krennic, Forest Whitaker as Saw Gerrera, Riz Ahmed as Bodhi Rook, Mads Mikkelsen as Galen Erso, Jimmy Smits as Bail Organa, Alistair Petrie as General Draven, Genevieve O'Reilly as Mon Mothma, Ben Daniels as General Merrick, and Paul Kasey as Admiral Raddus. You can rent or buy 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' or download a digital copy online now.

Click Here to watch the Fantastic Beasts trailer! First of all, I have to say I am not a Harry Potter fan. I have never read the books, nor seen the movies, like the promo announces before the feature film on DVD and Blu-Ray, about being immersed into this magical world at a Disney amusement park. But that is exactly what happens when you watch this movie! When Newt (Eddie Redmayne) lands in New York, and his fantastic beasts start their spree of mischief, the world of magic meets our so-called world of non-magic where we are referred to as 'no-mages'. I must say I enjoyed this movie and regret not seeing it in IMAX. The imagery and creativity that went into developing such creatures and alternate realities is extraordinary. The performances are rather good as well. I was drawn into the relationships that develop between the principal players as the story unfolds.
The movie also stars Katherine Waterston, Dan Fogler, Colin Farrell and Jon Voight, and newcomers Alison Sudol and Ezra Miller (who we will see as the Flash in the upcoming Justice League movie). You can rent or buy 'Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them' or download a digital copy online now.
If I would have seen this movie in IMAX, I would have given this movie 4 stars, but it came close.

Click Here to watch the Doctor Strange trailer! Of all the Superhero or Comic Book movies to come out last year, this was the one I was waiting for and I wasn't disappointed. Just like Suicide Squad, I found it more satisfying the second time around and I'll watch it again and again...
If you only see it once, watch it again. There is something in it that you might have missed. For us Marvel comics fans, we have been waiting for this for a long time. Not only do you see how Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) becomes the Sorcerer Supreme, but how he may play a role in Thor: Ragnarok. Watch the end credits. I was definitely suprised by the actress (Tilda Swinton) who played the Ancient One. The fight scenes combined Martial Arts and Magic. Now that the movie is out on Blu-Ray and Digital Download, get ready to take a psychedelic trip into another reality... beyond time and space. Doctor Strange does drag at first, but once the good doctor begins his journey of self discovery, it gets really exciting!
